Shortcomings graphic novel7/5/2023 Ben is helpless as, well, a baby.īen's life unravels through the slow disintegration of his relationship with the beautiful Miko Hayashi. Biological impulses prevail over brainpower. But for all he has learned, he is powerless to control his own shallow life. He is able to break down life's complexities into neat little compartments that he can deride without attachment. He is intelligent, maybe too intelligent. His slate is full of sardonic criticism of the world he lives in. Ben Tanaka, Tomine's aimless protagonist, is a fully functioning grown up. On the surface, the characters have been programmed with survival skills to face life's challenges. Shortcomings, a graphic novel by Adrian Tomine, is life by instinct. No one taught it how to blink, how to cry, how to kick its chubby legs. And yet, on some basic level, it already has everything it needs to know to face life. The baby enters the world a blank slate waiting for instruction. The bright lights, the strange noises, the sensation of being surrounded by tall strangers poking around overwhelm the senses. When a newborn baby comes into the world, everything is a wonder.

Ruth Ware is an international number one bestseller. (Reviews on The Turn of the Key and The Woman in Cabin 10 and will follow soon) This was the third Ruth Ware book I’ve read, and I am looking forward to reading more of her work. This brilliantly original, grippingly unpredictable story will have you reading through the night. The Death of Mrs Westaway will keep you on the edge of your seat, and just when you are convinced that you know exactly what is going to happen, there is a curve ball that has you re-thinking your theory. While at times the character missed things that were right in front of her and I wanted to reach in and point out the things she did not notice. As I turned the pages, I found myself as uncertain and confused as the character herself was. This young character quickly wins you over and as you turn the pages, you start rooting for Hal and supporting her deception. I found myself very quickly caught up in this story, finding it almost impossible to put the book down. This dark and dramatic thriller from Ruth Ware will keep you riveted. |
