History of Wolves by Emily Fridlund7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() Lindaor Mattie or Madelinewas the voice I found that allowed me to think through some of this. ![]() And more broadly, I wanted to tell a story from the perspective a teenage girl who has not been transformed into a sexual object, and yet one who cannot help but understand the way that transformation grants a certain kind coveted visibility, even while it denies other forms of power. I wanted to think more about this small gesture, the boldness that might inspire it, as well as the longing for human contact. ![]() ![]() I began my own story with a middle school history teacher collapsing in front of his class, and a teenage girl reluctantly approaching him, taking his hand. I remember walking around the lush, manicured campus at the University of Southern California and scribbling a fitful response to what had come to seem to me like an overly examined subject in fiction: that of the experienced male teacher falling for a younger, highly eroticized female student. Coetzee's marvelous Disgrace and Francine Prose's Blue Angel. The first chapter was initially a short story that I wrote for a fiction workshop, in which we readamong other thingstwo novels about teachers and students: J. Memento amie kaufman7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() It was so great seeing all of our favorite characters from the first two books as well as the new additions. There were so many great moments in this book and so many of them were not what they seemed. There was so much action in this book that my heart was beating a mile a minute on almost every page. ![]() In this book we add a new setting with Kerenza IV where BeiTech and hostile taken over because get this.there were survivors!!! It was so sad to see that so many of these BeiTech soldiers didn't even agree with what they were doing but they still lost their lives fighting for the "cause", leaving behind families and loved ones. There could be a few minor spoilers for the other two books in this review. I went into this trilogy with no expectation because I have never been a sci-fi fan but I leave it with a new top favorite series of all. REVIEW: What a ground shaking conclusion to this incredible sci-fi trilogy. ![]() Chesapeake Requiem by Earl Swift7/7/2023 ![]() Swift explains in his introduction that after his daily encounters with the island residents, he returned to his quarters - the second floor of a home on the West Ridge - and sketched out their words and interactions. Blue crabs and oysters are the primary catch these days. ![]() ![]() A host of other nearby islands in Virginia and Maryland have suffered the same plight as that looming for Tangier, with their uplands growing smaller and smaller until the bay simply washes over them completely.Īgainst this riveting background, Swift carefully portrays the life of the Tangier resident, essentially either watermen or relatives living off the catch of watermen. ![]() Quite frankly, as Swift believes, Tangier may not be long for this Chesapeake Bay world. Then he went all-in, choosing to live on the island in the Chesapeake Bay for.Īs Swift develops the saga of Tangier Island, the story often focuses on the rising bay waters and a sinking island versus what the islanders believe is just immense, “wind-driven” erosion. ![]() He returned as a reporter for the Pilot for at least two other trips, reporting stories on Tangier. The small army of 300 is commanded to attack at night (verse 9). The Eternal, not wanting his people to believe their own strength freed them from their enemies, decides to whittle down the initial 32,000 men (Judges 7:2 - 3) who volunteered to fight the Midianites. Still lacking faith, however, he asks for and receives two miracles involving a fleece (Judges 8:36 - 40). Once again faced with the chance to shape history. Once again caught up in the disputes of violent men. As if she could wake the dead.Īnd Briseis, carrying her future in her womb: the unborn child of the dead hero Achilles. Hecuba, howling and clawing her cheeks on the silent shore, as if she could make her cries heard in the gloomy halls of Hades. Stubborn Amina, with her gaze still fixed on the ruined towers of Troy, determined to avenge the slaughter of her king. They have only ever been believed when she can get a man to deliver them. All that beauty, all that grace – and she was just a mouldy old bone for feral dogs to fight over.Ĭassandra, who has learned not to be too attached to her own prophecies. But the wind has vanished, the seas becalmed by vengeful gods, and so the warriors remain in limbo – camped in the shadow of the city they destroyed, kept company by the women they stole from it. ![]() ![]() They can return home as victors – all they need is a good wind to lift their sails. So I was thrilled to see this turn up on Netgalley – and even more thrilled to be approved to read it.īLURB: Troy has fallen. ![]() ![]() While it was a powerful, disturbing read, I have always had a soft spot of Greek myths and this retelling really stayed with me.
